Now that you've been on the show for a while, how do you think they are handling the racial issues of that generation?
Arlen: I think they are handling it really well right now because the characters are growing so much. I mean at first it was more focused on the Pryor family and now everything is just mixed in. Everything that happens in “American Dreams” affects everybody. And now we are seeing that really happen. Everyone is being affected, both of the families.
Will: I think they are handling it really well. I think they are handling it accurately. I think there are a lot of stories to tell about it. I think the coolest part is that it's still a subject that's very live today.
I've asked you this before, but I'll ask again. Is your character ever going to join Meg on “American Bandstand?”
Arlen: Meg has to invite me! Sam (my character) and I got really mad because Jamie's character [Luke] only knew Meg for a couple of days and she invited him to “Bandstand.” I was sitting there like, “Sam wants to go!” (laughing)
Who's been your favorite singing guest star, so far?
Arlen: I know mine. Who's yours?
Will: It's between Wayne Brady and Usher, I guess.
Arlen: Mine was India Arie. You've got to love India Arie.
And who are you looking forward to having on the show?
Arlen: We can say, can't we?
Will: Are we allowed to say?
Arlen: I think so. I'm not sure if we can say it or not.
Will: You say it (laughing).
Arlen: B2K is coming on as The Temptations.
How soon will that episode air?
Arlen: They actually filmed this Friday. It'll probably take about a month and a half for them to be on.
The show is a serious drama that has its light moments. What's it like behind the scenes? Any practical jokers on the set?
Arlen: I haven't played any tricks yet. I say 'yet' because I'm a big jokester. We have a lot of good times when we are not rolling, when we are just hanging out and tossing the football.
Will: It's real time intensive so there's not much time for goofing around, but we are really close and we have a good time with each other. It's a great group.
What's the most difficult part of playing a teenager from that time period?
Arlen: For me, one of the things that's really hard for me is the clothes. The girls look really pretty and cute. But the guys… Our pants are really tight. The lettermen's jackets are really cool, but I can't get used to the penny loafers.
And for you, Will?
Will: I've got to go with pants. Yeah, the pants (laughing).
