Will Estes seems to have a thing for characters with injuries. He played a wounded Vietnam vet on the canceled American Dreams, portrays a quadriplegic in this week's Lifetime movie The Dive from Clausen's Pier, and gets in a car accident in the first episode of his new series, Reunion, premiering in September on Fox.
"There's always a little injury in every good drama," says Estes, 26. He has a point. In Clausen's Pier, based on Ann Packer's 2002 novel, Estes plays Mike, an all-American guy who's engaged to his high school sweetheart, Carrie (Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Michelle Trachtenberg). He's leading an apparently charmed life when an ill-fated plunge leaves him a quadriplegic-changing his relationships.
Estes says he was drawn to "the human side" of the story. "I wanted to show there are a lot of people who live happy lives after [becoming paralyzed]."
To prepare, Estes, an avid surfer who works out regularly, shadowed Kevin Murphy, a technical adviser on the film who's lived with an injury similar to Mike's for 20 years. "I worked with Will on eating, dressing - all the tasks of daily life," says Murphy, 35. "I'm confident he got it down as well as he could."
After all, Estes is an experienced actor. The Los Angeles native landed the starring role of Will on The New Lassie at age 11, and he's been working nonstop ever since. This fall, Reunion may even make Estes a household name.
On the series, he plays one of six friends who graduate high school in 1986 and go in different directions. But in 2006, one of the friends is murdered, and each episode looks back at a year in their lives as a detective tries to solve the case. Still, with its secret crushes and lies, the show is more The O.C. than Law & Order. What's more, Estes' character even does some yard work. So, does that make him next season's hot gardener?
"Hey, I'm all for it," Estes says. "I can cut the lawn."
